Official Master's Degree In The Electric Power Industry
Welcome everybody to this Q&A session on the 'Master in the Electric Power Industry'. My name is Luis Olmos, and I am managing this program together with Rafael Cossent, whos is the program coordinator. This session is addressed to people considering the possibility of applying for admission in this program. We will be answering questions in English, though you may ask them both in English or Spanish (asking them in English would, in any case, be more helpful for the rest of people participating in this session). The session will start at 15:00 and we hope you will find it helpful.

Javier Aguirre.
We aim for an overall number of students in class of about 30, in average terms. These include students from the Erasmus-Mundus program EMIN (2 years), students taking the joint degree on Industrial Engineering + MEPI, and full MEPI students (only taking this program).
In any case, we try to admit into the program all those we believe are good candidates while ensuring a small-enough group so that clases are fruitful and they run smoothly.

GRACIAS.
Taking the EMIN program after having taken the MEPI one is perfectly possible. In fact, there is one student having taken a degree in Delft that is now part of the EMIN program who is going to take the MEPI program next academic year. Nonetheless, being admitted to the MEPI program does not automatically imply being admitted to the EMIN one. Your case would have to be analysed by the EMIN admissions committee.

Gracias.
The program addreses all the different issues related to the electric power sector, particularly focusing on economic and regulatory aspects. Naturally, the topic of renewable energies is very timely and relevant. In fact there is a module fully devoted to it. However, it is definitely not the only focus of the program.

¿Las prácticas son obligatorias? ¿Cuándo se harían y cuánto tiempo?Tiempo limite para presentar la solicitud? Muchas gracias.
Taking some internship is compulsory in the MEPI program. However, this may be taken within the University itself doing some research work related to the topics discussed in the program. You may start them as soon as you get one (the internship topic and supervisor that are approved by the master theses coordinator). We will be looking for internships for you to help you find one.
Applying for admission into the program is possible until the 30th of June. Then, an extraordinary application period may be open closing at the beginning of September (7th of September).

A good level of English is a pre-requisite for admission. Even you do not have a certificate, you will have the chance to prove it in a personal interview.

¿Qué participación tiene Endesa en el programa?
Endesa is one of the companies supporting the MEPI program. They belong to the consultive council comprising main companies and institutions in the power sector in Spain. Endesa also contributes some lecturers to some of the subjects and offers some internships to students in the context of the program.

Gracias.
This complement corresponds to a module on Fundamentals on electrical engineering and optimization techniques. This course takes place during the first half of September (thus starting a couple of weeks before the actual MEPI classes).
The admissions committee decides for each candidate whether this complement is required or not. Normally, those students without any previous background in electrical engineering and/or operations research are asked to take this course.

The admission evaluation is based on the documents submitted by the candidates (academic record, CV, motivation letter, English certificates, recommendation letters, etc.) as well as a personal interview with the program Director. Thus, no admission exams exist as such. Having professional experience in the power sector will be postively considered too.
You can find further info at the MEPI webpage (http://www.icai.upcomillas.es/es/master/mepi) under the tab on admission information found in the lower part of the web.

Engineers having taken a three year program, instead of a four-to-six one, may be admitted into the MEPI program, though this is not the most common access profile. They may probably need to take some additional complementary modules like the 'Fundamentals on Electrical Engineering and Optimization Techniques' one. Applications for admission will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

WHAT EMPLOYABILITY AND WHAT KIND OF ENGINEERS HAVE BETTER PROFILE FOR THE MASTER ?
Having studied the MEPI master, you should be well prepared to work in most of the departments and divisions of electric utilities, consultancy companies active in this sector, as well as regulatory bodies, or other entities related to it, like the System Operator. The MEPI program is not focused on research but on preparing students for working in a company in the power sector. However, the knowledge about the electric industry students acquired in the program may be useful for doctorate programs in a related field.
According to surveys conducted, most of the students having taken this master have found a related job six months after having finished the program. Practically, all of our former students have found a job two years after finishing it. You can find more information at:

¿Cuántas plazas hay y cuantas solicitudes? ¿% de admitidos? ¿Más posibilidades si se hace con el doble Máster? Gracias.
The number of admissions to the program (pure MEPI students, excluding EMIN and double degree students) is on average around 15 people. The ratio of admissions over applications is, depending on the year, around 25-33%. Nonetheless, we do our best so that all the candidates with an appropriate profile are admitted to the program.
Being admitted to a joint program (either EMIN or double degree in industrial engineering + MEPI) could be considered to be harder as candidates have to comply with the requirements both for the MEPI program and the additional degree.

Within the programme, traditional in-class sessions delivered by Comillas’ academic staff are combined with sessions where students learn about the application of principles learned in the former type of sessions from renowned professionals. Besides, students need to address case-studies with their classmates, some of which require the use of specialized software. All the means required to successfully undertake the activities within the programme are provided by the University.

The MEPI programme introduces students to the technical and economic aspects of the electricity sector over a one year period. Master's Degree students will gain in-depth knowledge of the economic, regulatory and technological foundations of the already existing and new business areas in this sector, as applied by companies and organisations. Besides, students will acquire direct experience of the application of these foundations through one-to-one supervised work (the Master Project) in one of the organisations, companies or at the Institute for Research in Technology of our University.

International applicants are assessed according to the same general criteria applied to any other student. Besides, they need to obtain an official permit to stay in Spain throughout the duration of the programme, as a master student, and need to legalize their academic degree through The Hague Apostille.
